Inner Planets 21.2

9-5-2014 21.2 Inner Planets

What are terrestrial Planets?

Planets who are very dense and have a rocky surface.

They are the first four planets in our solar system.

1st Planet

Mercury – has 38% of Earth’s mass;

Rotation (Earth’s day) = 58 days 19 hours,

Year = 88 Earth days long;

Distance from the Sun = 3.2 light min.

Atmosphere- -175 C at night; 427 C during the day

2nd Planet

Venus- is known as Earth’s twin, slightly smaller.

Rotation = Retrograde – a clockwise (backwards) spin of a planet.

Rotation- 243 days and 16 hours;

Year = 224 days and 17 hours

Distance from the sun = 6.0 light minutes

Atmosphere = the hottest planet 460C due to the greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse effect= carbon dioxide gas traps heat and makes the planet very

hot. Sulfuric Acid makes the atmosphere yellow. These two gases are

Deadly to any living organism.

3rd Planet

Earth – the only planet which supports life, the only planet that has water.

Rotation = 23 hours and 56 minutes

Distance from the sun = 8.3 minutes

Atmosphere =78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% carbon dioxide and

other gases.

Year = 365 days and 6 hours

4th Planet

Mars – is known as the red planet due to red dust

Rotation = 24 hours 40 minutes

Distance from the sun = 12.7 light minutes

Atmospheric Temp range from -13C to -77C; any water is in ice form

Largest Volcano in the Solar System is found on Mars = Olympus Mons.
