The Diversity of Cells/ Cell History

5-11-2015 The Diversity of Cells Chapter 3.1

Who saw the first cell under the

Robert Hooke – in 1665, looked at cork cell under a microscope. The cork

Microscope?

looked like tiny boxes. He named the boxes cell, meaning little rooms.

He also looked at fish scales, feathers, and house flies eyes. He also

looked at plant and animal cells, he noted that they looked different from

each other.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek- in 1675, looked at pond scum and saw small

organisms he called animalcules, which means little animals. He also looke

looked at animal and human blood. Animal cells are shape oval, human re roun

blood cells are round.

The Cell Theory

200 years later- Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann studied plant

and animal cells. They discovered that all living things are made of cells.

Schwann wrote the 1st two parts of the cell theory.

  1. All organisms are made from one or more cells.

  1. The cell is the basic unit of life.

Rudolf Virchow wrote the 3rd theory in 1858:

  1. All cells come from existing cells. (Cells form only from other cells).

Time Line of discoveries:

1665-Hooke discovered the cell.

1831- Robert Brown discovered the nucleus of a plant cell.

1838- Schleiden discovered that all plant tissue is made of cells.

1839- Schwann discovered that all animal tissue is made of cells,

1858- Virchow determines that all cells are produced from cells.

1873- Anton Schneider observes and accurately describes mitosos.

1941- George Beadle AND Edward Tatum discover that genes control

The chemical reactions in cells.

1951- Martha Chase and Anthony Hershey demonstrate that DNA is

Heredity material.

1956- The manufacture of protein occurs in ribosomes.

1971- Lynn Margulis proposes the endosymbiotic theory of the origin

Of cell organelles.

1997- A sheep named Dolly was the first animal to be cloned from a single

Body cell.

2002- Scientists test a cancer vaccine that can be given orally. Tests on

Mice lead scientist to believe that it can help humans.
